Bangalore Rugby - Indian Rugby

About Bangalore RFC

bangalore rugby club, karnataka

Bangalore Rugby Football Club was founded in 1996, predominantly by ex-pats. It consisted of only a 1st XV adult team. Today, BRFC still has a truly international flavour but is predominantly Indian with 4 thriving teams feeding into it - the future of rugby in Bangalore is very bright indeed.

The IRFU organises three major tournaments each year. The Callaghan Cup (Qualificaton for All India) held in Delhi in 2005 we won the Cup by beating the Army in the final, The Hutch All India and South East Asia tournament and the Hutch All India 7s Tournament. The best teams in India qualify and compete. Often foreign teams are invited to compete.

In 2005 Bangalore finished runners-up in the tournament, losing to the British Asian Bulls in the final; but confirmed our place as India's No.1 rugby team. In 2006 Bangalore shared the Plate with CCFC after torrential rain washed out the final. Bangalore was also delighted to get two teams, Bangalore 1st VII and the Bangalore Refugees to the semi-finals of the 2006 Hutch All India 7s help in Chennai.

We have provided several players to the Indian National team over the years, Internationals include: Tarun Appanna, Puneeth Krishnamurthy, Subramani P.E. & Vinay Rai.
